Two Days in Lake Como: The Perfect Lake Como Itinerary from Milan

Looking for the perfect Lake Como itinerary? If you only have two days in Lake Como, this guide covers the most beautiful villages, iconic villas, luxury hotels, and unforgettable lake views. Easily reached by train from Milan, Lake Como is one of Italy’s most spectacular destinations and the perfect place to relax, recharge, and experience la dolce vita.

From the romantic streets of Varenna and the famous waterfront of Bellagio to the luxurious atmosphere of Tremezzo and the breathtaking villas that have appeared in Hollywood films, this two-day Lake Como itinerary includes all the highlights while still allowing time to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the lake.

Day 1: Varenna, Bellagio and Tremezzo

The journey begins with a scenic one-hour train ride from Milan to Varenna. Arriving in Varenna feels like stepping into a postcard and is, in my opinion, the perfect introduction to Lake Como.

One of the first places to visit is Villa Monastero, one of the most beautiful villas on Lake Como. The villa’s botanical gardens stretch along the waterfront and offer spectacular views across the lake. Palm trees, exotic plants, flowers, and elegant pathways create one of the most picturesque spots in the region.

After visiting the gardens, spend time exploring Varenna itself. This charming village is full of colorful houses, romantic alleyways, lakeside cafés, and historic churches. Compared to some of the busier towns on Lake Como, Varenna feels peaceful and authentic.

Next, take the ferry to Bellagio, often called the Pearl of Lake Como. Bellagio is famous for its elegant streets, beautiful waterfront, luxury boutiques, and lively atmosphere. Although it was a little too touristy for my personal taste, it is undoubtedly one of the must-see destinations on Lake Como.

Bellagio is also one of the best places to shop for Lake Como silk, known worldwide for its exceptional quality. Alongside silk boutiques, you’ll find luxury fashion stores, local artisan shops, cafés, restaurants, and beautiful spots to enjoy an Aperol Spritz overlooking the lake.

From Bellagio, continue by ferry to Tremezzo, my favorite destination on Lake Como.

For the ultimate luxury experience, stay at the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo. This legendary hotel has welcomed celebrities, royalty, and international travelers for decades. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck reportedly chose Lake Como for romantic escapes, while George and Amal Clooney have helped make the lake famous around the world.

With its floating pool, elegant restaurants, lush gardens, and glamorous atmosphere, Grand Hotel Tremezzo gives serious White Lotus vibes. Even if you’re not staying overnight, visiting for lunch, dinner, or cocktails is an experience worth having.

Day 2: Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta

Wake up early and enjoy a swim with views of Lake Como before heading to Lenno by ferry.

From Lenno, take a short private boat ride to Villa del Balbianello, widely considered one of the most beautiful villas in Italy. Located on a dramatic peninsula overlooking the lake, the villa became famous after appearing in the James Bond film Casino Royale and Star Wars: Episode II.

The gardens are absolutely breathtaking and offer some of the most iconic views in Lake Como.

After visiting Villa del Balbianello, return to Tremezzo and explore Villa Carlotta. Famous for its impressive botanical gardens, sculptures, artworks, and lakefront setting, Villa Carlotta is another must-visit attraction on Lake Como.

In the afternoon, take the ferry back to Varenna and enjoy one final look at the lake before returning to Milan.

Final Thoughts: Is Lake Como Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

Lake Como is one of those rare destinations that instantly makes you slow down. Whether you’re exploring historic villas, enjoying long lunches by the water, swimming with mountain views, or simply watching the ferries glide across the lake, there is a sense of peace here that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Personally, I left wishing I had stayed for an entire week.

Lake Como is not just a destination, it’s a place to relax, recharge, and reconnect with yourself. It is truly one of Italy’s greatest treasures and a destination I will definitely return to.

If you’re planning a trip to Northern Italy, I cannot recommend Lake Como enough. It is, without a doubt, a jewel of Italy.
